A Tribute to Ken Cooke

Ken was a long serving Borough Councillor, Mayor, Alderman and a chairman of Colchester Civic Society.
Born and brought up in Layer de la Haye, Ken worked for Colchester Cooperative Society Funeral Department and then later at the University of Essex. In addition to serving on many committees, and the board of Colchester Cooperative Society, he was also a member of St Peter’s Church and at one time a member of the Parochial Church Council.
In addition to all this Ken was a member of the Labour Party and for many years served as a Borough Councillor representing Berechurch Ward and then Castle Ward, where he lived for most of his life.
In 1990 he served as Mayor of Colchester and later was made an Alderman in recognition of his long service to the Borough. Following his retirement from the Council he joined Colchester Civic Society in 1999, and continued his public service by becoming a member of the executive committee, where his knowledge of the Borough’s Planning Department proved to be very useful.
In more recent years Ken became a vice president of the society. He will be sadly missed by our members, especially those serving on the executive committee, which Ken continued to attend until his death on 2nd March this year.
He will be remembered as a person concerned for others and always willing to help where ever he could. He fought many battles on behalf of his constituents and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends in all political parties
Ken was given a private funeral on Thursday 2nd April. There was to have also been a Civic reception in his honour at the town hall. But sadly this has been postponed because of the Corona Virus Emergency.
