Civic Society excursion

30 members went to the Tate Gallery to see the Late Turner exhibition, which is due to end shortly. We were treated to a lecture from one of the curators on J MW Turner and the stories behind his paintings . Afterwards we were free to look at the paintings in the exhibition. Included were “Peace – burial at sea” and “Departure of the flett”, all completed in his last 20-25 years.

Turner bequeathed his collection to the nation and the Tate has a large number on display. Apart from these, the Tate has a room full of Hogarth’s works and much more to see.
