The Scheregate plaque

The Civic Society is delighted to report, having arranged for the extensive cleaning of the very dirty and unreadable 1967 commemorative plaque at Scheregate Steps, that the work has been completed and it looks great.

Following the formation of the Colchester Civic Society in 1964, an improvements committee was set up to consider schemes to enhance the town centre. Scheregate Steps stood out as needing improvement – the area had become very rundown and shabby. The Society met with potential sponsors and agreed a programme of work, heavily supported by grants. Unnecessary signage was removed, inappropriate windows were replaced and the whole area was repainted.
The scheme sponsors were the Colchester Civic Society, Borough of Colchester, Essex County Council, Colchester and District Chamber of Commerce and the Scheregate Traders Association.
